As our nation's make-up has diversified, as has our union. Our members speak a mayriad of languages and represent countries around the globe. While with diversity comes a wealth of international knowledge, challenges are faced as well. One main obstacle is the language barrier that stands in the way of many immigrants. Some immigrant members expressed they were unable to fully articulate their ideas or understand the ideas of others, from this problem was born a solution: The United American European Carpenters Club. Formed in late August 2006, the club's executive interpreting or expressing points and ideas during meetings or any other function. Ramadan Rambo Ibric, one of the club's founders, stated "just paying dues on time doesn't make you a good union member" He indentifies the sole purpose of the club as being to educate and inform the members and get them involved in their union. Ibric stresses that it is essential within a union to be educated about history of the American Labor movement. Members must realize that we continue to fight for the rights of workers just as those who were killed on May 1 during the Haymarket Riot of 1886 were fighting for their rights and voices. The hope is that this club will alleviate fear for the members who have not spoken up before because they felt their voice would not be understood. Any member, regardless of national origin, is invited to join and further strengthen the solidarity within our union. OUR MESSAGE IS CLEAR! WE CAN'T CHANGE THE PAST, THOUGH UNITED WE CAN CHANGE THE FUTURE! |
